Island Culture Today The original St. Paul airport was constructed by the Army in 1942 and various improvements continued over the decades. In 2004, funding through the Federal Aviation Administration supported the paving of the St. Paul Island airport runway. St. George did not have an airport until the 1980's, and it was located on the roadway just west of the village. In the mid-1990's a larger runway was constructed at the west end of the island. The St. George Island airport runway was paved in 2006.
